Deployment - Daemons
...Khorne dogs, fiends and a couple of wizard heralds of Slaanesh.
Deployment - Dark elves
This picture is actually taken with the elves already on the move. They have tvo reaper bolt throwers, two units of repeater crossbows, a big block of Black guard, a master on a pegasus... There is also a unit of shades lurking in the forest down to the left. They probably have an
assassin equipped with Boots of flying around and throwing shuriken at people.
On the other flank we have two more reaper bolt throwers, an additional unit of crossbows and a sorceress. So the match-up is speed versus shooting. Could go either way, right?
Dark elves turn 1
The black guard advance, the pegasus and a unit of crossbows take position on the hill in the enter of the battlefield. The shades stomp through the forest into view of the Khorne dogs, a decision that the assassin doesn't like very much, so he stays behind the woods. Some shooting is going on, but not that many daemons die from it.
Daemons turn 1
The flesh hounds charge the shades, who decide to flee, leaving the dawgs stuck in the forest. The other unit of hounds approach the Black guard while the fiends prepare to flank them. The rest of the army moves forward. The fiends seem to be affected by some spell, but I don't remember which one. Might be Word of pain, or some of the daemons' own magic.
Dark elves turn 2
The black guard can't reach the flesh hounds with a charge, so they just close the distance. They are quite likely to have the banner of Kill you dead before you can strike, so they are not that worried. The pegasus lands behind enemy lines to do some march blocking and threaten some butts.
Daemons turn 2
Here we can see that the dark elf assassin has flown over the forest to throw some Stars at stuff. Doesn't seem too effective against these kinds of targets. The elven shooters have killed one of the fiends, but the last one charges one of the bolt throwers. The flesh hounds charge the black guard, just for the hell of it. The hounds in the forest move through it to yelp at the shades again (they haven't moved yet in this picture, though).
The crossbowmen on the hill get charged by two units of daemonettes while the somewhat decimated seekers on the right flank charge the crossbows over there. The elves on the hill should probably have fled instead on holding, not only because they'll surely die, but also since the daemonette unit to their left has the greater unit strength. That means the daemonettes will pursue towards the lower left corner of this picture, where the rest of the elves are.
The combat phase ends like this. Many dead crossbow elves and some daemonettes surging forwards towards the shooters in the corner to the left. The flesh hounds eat some black guard, and take some casualties themselves.
Daemons turn 4
For the next turn or so, the daemons devour all of the dark elf shooters and the shades. The black guard kill the doggies and turn around to walk back to their own deployment zone, where most of the daemons now are. As we can see, the daemons are repositioning themselves to deal with this threat.
Here's a picture of the other side of the dark elf deployment zone. There is actually one bolt thrower left. No matter how fast you are, it is hard to obliterate a whole gunline very quickly from the front because you have to use a lot of time repositioning in order to charge the next target. The screamers appear to be shot down (or killed by the pegasus), and the sorcererss is alive and kicking. The screamers made some attempts to kill the pegasus, but that didn't go very well.
We fast-forward again, to the point where the black guard finally reach the daemons. Suffice to say, they kill all of the units in that corner without taking many casualties themselves. The daemons probably regret that they didn't use their speed to stay away from the black guard until the battle was over. That might have had won them the game, but no cigar today. It is a solid victory for the dark elves.
